Greetings to the Commissioners to Quiet Land Titles: I hereby explain to you the claims of our Makuakane, from ancient times.
1. The Ahupua`a of East Koloa from inland to the sea. It was given by Kalaimoku to our Makuakane, Kauhi, at the time when the warriors of Hawaii were victorious over Kauai, when Kauai became a Panala`au /territory/ of the Kingdom of Kamehameha I.* After this victory, Kaikioewa Palekaluhi sailed as Governor of Kauai. At that time Kauai was cut up and the Konohikis were installed, in accordance with his governance.
At that time Kauhi held Koloa, as given by Kalaimoku; however, Koakanu occupied it together with Kauhi, until his death, when Kauhi still held the land until 1839 on the 10th day of April, when Kaikioewa died, and Emilia Keaweamahi became Governor of Kauai. I. Kaanaana, sworn, witness: I know Paehewa's land.
Section 1 - House lot and a kula area in the ili of Lauuluhaa in West Koloa.
Section 2 - Five lois and a kula area in the ili of Kaauwaelalo in East Koloa.
Section 1:
Mauka by sugar cane garden of the heirs of Nakaumahana
Puna by stream
Makai by Lauuluhaa kula
Hanapepe by sugar cane garden of Nakaumahana.
Section 2:
Mauka by auwailuna (upper ditch)
Puna by loi of Makea
Makai by Kaluaakamihi ili
Hanapepe by Koloa stream.
Section 1 was received from P. Kanoa. Section 2 came from Kauhi through Kaahumanu. No one has opposed.
Halewale, sworn, witness: I have heard the testimony of Kaanaana concerning the land of J.H. Paehewa and it is true.
