No. 1045, George Holmes, Honolulu, November 23, 1847
N.R. 606v2

Greetings to you, William L Lee, the President of the Land Commissioners: I, George Holmes, the undersigned, am a claimant of a house lot in Honolulu. This lot is on the north of the lot of Hannah Holmes, mauka of the road going to Ewa and on the south of the place of Hale Nika /Harry Wallis/ at Palelewa.

The claim to this place was established when it was unused land; Kamehameha I returned to Hawaii and appointed my makuakane to administer when it was unused land; Kamehameha I returned to Hawaii and appointed my makuakane to administer /na mea hihia /legal claims or suits/, and seeing that this place was unused, my makuakane built a house and fenced it completely, and lived there until his death. I am living here at this place in peace, with no objections from anyone.

When you direct me to come, on that day I will come and bring some proper witnesses who know of my true claim to that place.

.... time of the bequest, nor have I known any other person had been living there. Mele /Mary/ has been living there peacefully under G. Holmes. She had gone on a trip to a foreign country /Kahiki/, had returned and lives there.

Haui, sworn, This place had been from Kamehameha I to Holmes. When Holmes died, he had bequested his entire estate, this place and lands to G. Holmes and his mother under him. When Holmes was still living, he had separate places for his (G. Holmes) two sisters, Hana and Pale. I have never known what had happened to the other two sisters. I have not seen any girl living there, perhaps she was living under G. Holmes. I do not know.

Opunui, sworn, I am here in Honolulu and I am living on G. Holmes' lot. I have seen Mahi and Halaki has lived with him, while Hana and Pale have their own separate lands. Mere, Halaki and Kini have no place. I have not seen O. Holmes for I am a newcomer.
