The Ahupuaa of Makapala, North Kohala, Island of Hawaii, 3d Judicial Circuit

On this, the fifteenth day of April A.D. 1873, the application of C.R. Bishop, for the settlement of the boundaries of the Ahupuaa of Makapala, District of North Kohala, Hawaii, came on to be heard before the undersigned Commissioner of Boundaries for the 3d Judicial circuit, after notice personally served on the owners of adjoining lands or on their agents.

Present: S.C. Wiltse on the part of C.R. Bishop, the applicant, James Wood for H.B. Jackson and D.K. Naiapaakai for Her Excellency, R. Keelikolani; Deed of Aamakao from His Majesty, Kamehameha IV, bearing date of December 1, 1858, and recorded July 6th 1859, Liber 12, pages 23d and 24th filed for boundary between Makapala and Aamakao.

S.C. Wiltse read the petition of the applicant in the following words;

Dear Sir:
The undersigned, acting for His Majesty, the King, would respectfully ask that the boundaries of the land called Makapala in Kohala, Hawaii, may be defined and settled.

The survey of said land and the notes of the same are in the hands of S.C. Wiltse, of Hamakua, who will attend at the hearing and act for the King. The land of Makapala is bounded on the east by Niulii, and on the west by Aamakao, both belonging to His late Majesty, Kamehameha V. Mauka by the land called Kehena, and makai by the sea.

Testimony for applicant
Kaohe, kane, sworn says, I was born at Waimea, and brought up on Honoaula, and have since then lived on the lands of Aamakao and Makapala in Kohala Hawaii. I was born when Kamehameha 1 was preparing to go to Oahu, the year before the Peleleau came to Kawaihae. I am a kamaaina of Makapala, and know the boundaries of the land. My parents who are now dead, showed me the boundaries of the land. Makapala is bounded on the east side by the land Niulii, Kehena mauka, Aamakao on the north side, and the sea on the makai side; the fishing rights grounds belonging to Makapala in old times estended [sic] out into the sea about as far from the shore as from where we are now to the top of that hill (pointing to a hill ....
