Testimony
Kekualiilii, kane, sworn, I live at Kamaee, Hilo; I was born there, and have always lived there. I was born at the time Kamehameha I returned from Honolulu to Hawaii and remained on Hawaii. I know a part of the boundaries of Hakalau Nui, that old people told me when I was young. Kamaee bounds Hakalau Nui on the Hamakua side of the valley; the muliwai belongs to Hakalau and the dry land on the Hamakua bank to Kamaee. Ancient fishing rights extending out to sea. Thence the boundary runs mauka along the Hamakua side of the stream to a place called Nakama, a hill way mauka in the woods, where we can see the shore; there are branches from the Kamaee side, first one called Kawelo, below the woods; thence the boundary follows up the main stream to where a large branch of the gulch called Wawaa comes in on the Hamakua side; the boundary follows up this branch, passing a branch from the Hamakua side called Wailimu, [page 360] and passing another branch from Hamakua side called Kuamoohua, up the main gulch called Nakama. This is as far as I know the boundaries.
Kamaee reaches to this place; Above this place the gulch is not so deep but is wide; I do not know where Kamaee ends; I have heard that Umauma cuts if off. I have always heard that Hakalau extends to the upper edge of woods. The main branch of Hakalau on the Hilo side, in the middle of the land has a great deal of sand in it. The Wawaa branch has none. I do not know the boundaries on the Hilo side of Hakalau Nui adjoining Hakalau iki.
Cross-examined
The boundary is along the Hamakua branch of the stream; in the valley. Where we used to go fishing in the stream, Hakalau people used to take the fish away from us.
Kanehoahani, kane, sworn, I was born at Kamaee and am a kamaaina. I was born at the time of Ualakaa; and know the land of Hakalau and the boundaries adjoining Kamaee. Fishing rights extending out to sea. The boundary between Hakalau and Kamaee at the shore is at a large flat rock in the water. The water in the stream belongs to Hakalau, and the dry land on the Hamakua side to Kamaee; Thence the boundary follows along the Hamakua side of the stream, passing the stream from Kamaee to a high water fall, thence mauka ....
