Greetings to the Land Commissioners: I hereby petition for my right to my lot which is at Wananalua, and a farm at Niumalu and Wananalua. This is how I got these places: I was a konohiki for Wananalua from Kanemaikou to Kahewahewanui, and I was a konohiki for Kahewahewanui. Afterwards I enclosed a lot for myself. I am a kamaaina of Niumalu and at this time my occupancy is under Ulumahe at Niumalu. No one has hindered me at this place for which I petition. It is at Hana, East Maui.

Huluhulu, sworn, He is claiming for his place at Wananalua in Hana. I have known this place well, a lot which is at Kuakaha at Wananalua from Kahewahewanui to Kawainui. Kahewahewanui had received it from Kanemaikou. There is a valley on the south side; the roa ....

.... has seen Kawainui's claim in Wananalua here, but does not know who had given it. He had gone to Koolau in 1840, as a stranger and was welcomed by Kekapa. Koenehe begged him and his wife to remain with him and they accepted his offer. Hopu asked for permission to build his house in Kawainui's enclosure and Konede refused saying, "That it is not our land." Then both Kekapa and Hopu asked, "Do we live under you. if we build our houses here?" They were told that they would be subjected to the chiefs. Hopu went to Wahie who was the overseer here at the time for a place in the uplands. Kawainui and Wahi both agreed to Hopu's request, however when Hopu was ready to build his fence, Konede contended that the enclosure would hinder his cattle (raising). Hopu was forced to find another land, he found it, where on he now lives.
