Explanation of the Right. Be it known by the Land Commissioners: I hereby explain to you my right in the land and in the house lot. I, Meeau, am a tenant on the `ili of Halaula III. My right is from the parents of my wahine. They are dead and I continue on living here at Wailuku. From the length of time of Auwae's residence in Wailuku, I worked on the land, the work days of the `li`i, and the konohiki, and paid the tax of the land - that is my claim.

Furthermore, the konohikis have denied my house site. Keaki said to me that this place would be fenced from Kuihelani's place to Naleipoleho&a ....

.... returned from Lahainaluna, I saw Meeau living there, and during which time I had became a school teacher. I have seen houses where were for Auwae before I had returned from Lahainaluna. In the year 1838 or 7 perhaps. I had seen Kalaula living with Meeau and it was the konohiki who had given (land) from Kahawaii of Wailuku to the cliff which obstructed his houses. He was the caretaker of that place. That is what I have known in addition to his houses. No one has ever objected to him to this day according to me knowledge.
